CORE and the LITERACY ZONE :
What is CORE?
Literacy West NY, Inc. (LWNY) is part of the Creating Opportunities in Rural Education (CORE) initiative. This collaboration consists of educators, human service providers, employment and training personnel, businesses, and other professionals working together to promote cooperative efforts to address community challenges.
A strategic planning process held in 2010 provided a roadmap for action. Click here (.pdf file 115 KB) to view the CORE strategic plan.
Our mission is to build partnerships that raise awareness, promote educational services, and expand employment opportunities to meet the changing needs of Allegany County. Our vision is to strengthen individuals and families, helping them attain self-sufficiency through increased literacy levels, educational attainment, workplace skills, and personal enrichment.
CORE committees meet regularly to develop and implement action plans addressing identified community needs. These committees are Birth to Fifth Grade, Secondary, Post Secondary Transition, Adult/Senior, and CORE Sustainability.
In 2009, LWNY was awarded the prestigious Literacy Zone grant from the NY Department of Education as a result of the collaboration through CORE. The Literacy Zone grant establishes a Family Welcome Center to connect families and community members to comprehensive services, resources, and case management support.
